What is stereo?

There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

McIntosh XR 19

The McIntosh XR 19 loudspeakers provide an unique listening experience. A pair of SR 19's can faithfully recreate all of the stereo depth and spaciousness that is put into a recording.
Older technology stopped with in-line driver mounting. By assembling the drivers all in the same vertical line, the system could be made to have equal left and right response. This meant that stereo imaging was more accurate. A pair of speakers would reproduce an easily located image between the speakers, but only in the plane of the wall against which the speakers were placed. Erroneously this was thought sufficient to reproduce stereo. Stereo is defined, however as "having or dealing with three dimensions of spece". By careful manipulation of response amplitude and arrival time, a degree of accuracy beyond older technology has been achieved. By adding the dimension of depth, a truly three dimensional sound space can be reproduced. In addition, the low and mid frequency drivers are mounted on the same plane surface. Combined with the elliptical tweeter array which is part of this surface, the correct time amplitude relationship can be maintained over, a wide angle. This is not possible with a stepped  back arrangement. The three dimensional sound space is preserved for a very large listening area.

Definition of individual and collective musical sounds has been improved by using multiple drivers which reduce distortion. This arrangement greatly increases the power handling capacity at high frequencies. The mid-range and low frequency drivers are specially designed high power units which compliment the tweeter array. A total of 15 drivers are built into each XR 19.

The performance of the speakers in your listening room will be influenced to some degree by the room size, shape, construction and furnishing. The location of the speakers in the room advisable to voice or equalize the speakers to the room for best performance. The McIntosh MQ 104 Environmental Equalizer is available for this purpose. Equalization is a service that your McIntosh franchised dealer is equipped trained, and ready to do for you. But in any event the low distortion and wide dispersion of the XR 19's will provide superior sound in the typical home environment.

 Specifications:
Reference Output Level :  One watt input referred to 6 ohms will produce an 86 dB sound pressure level at 1 meter
Frequency Response :  the frequency range capability of the XR 19 is from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. The smoothness of response however, nay be influenced by your listening anvironment.. Equalization can be used to restore smooth response when necessary.
Amplifier Damping Factor :  the minimum amplifier damping factor requirement is 10. adequate connecting wire size must be used to maintain proper damping factor and minimize power losses. Performance of the XR 19 is not significantly improved with super high amplifier damping factors.
Power recommendations :  As little as 30 watts can be used for smaller rooms or low listening levels. As adequate power reserve is recommended, however, to handle unexpected peaks from program material with wide dynamic range or when using expanders.  It will also help to avoid clipping the power amplifier which can cause distorted sound or blown amplifier which can cause distorted sound or blown fuses. McIntosh  amplifiers equipped will Power Guard automatically prevent clipping. Amplifiers up to 250 watts or higher can be used when the program material is similar in spectral content to "program" noise.
